The urban void currently represented by the area of Stari Pazar in the historical city center of Šibenik has endured a sort of unwanted symbiosis with the city’s main road, the King Zvonimir Street. The intense internal and transit traffic flow dominates over the public surface of the area in question. Features usually typical for Mediterranean urban spatial configurations – capillaries, nodes, nooks and crannies of historical cores – are not present in this urban fragment.
Within a framework of minimal interventions, rather than enforcing the autonomy of Stari Pazar from the adjacent road, the project seeks to transform this symbiosis into a homogeneous organism with an analytical sequence. This symbiosis would comprise networking the scope of the area concerned into the pedestrian fluctuations within the Old Town district and the transportability of the wider context, as well as attractions and events. The goal is the spatial adoption of stunted urban functions and a transformation through a concept aimed at organizing and popularizing modern public transport. In this sense, Stari Pazar becomes a land port. Rather than setting off an impulse that would generate frequency, the project aims to organize frequency that generates spatial impulses, scenarios, and various uses, directly responding to the issues of the space. At the same time, within the surrounding constructed and dead tissue, purposes generated by the newly created fluctuation algorithm of the local and translocal are activated.
The niches of the public transport stops are organized in a print negative of the newly formed meandering street profile. The King Zvonimir Street is transformed from a mere road into a full-fledged high street. The gradual inversion of consumption from individual to public transport regenerates new valuable spaces that have up to now been burdened with parked cars.
