The Traditional Crafts Square is dedicated to the tradition and centuries-old connection between the City of Varaždin and the craftsmen who have always represented the foundation of almost all segments of the city's life. In the delicate context of the location in question, the proposed “cottages” of a simple and restrained design are enriched with additional educational values - they represent a new layer of the city center and transform the square into an inspiring tourist gathering point.
The centrally grouped cottages transform the square by allowing for two distinctly different modes of functioning. When their sides are opened, the cottages become covered sales pavilions open during working hours, and when closed, outside of working hours, they turn the square into an open-air “museum” of traditional crafts. The entire sales and exhibition display can be viewed by moving linearly or the complex of cottages can be explored freely, as each visitor sees fit. Placing the cottages centrally in the square allows them to be used from all sides. The sides open in both directions, creating a larger sales space, while their removal creates niches of public space for presentation purposes and rest.
